The medieval heart of the city is a UNESCO world heritage site, remaining beautifully intact and atmospheric within 13th century ramparts. No cars are allowed and wandering the narrow cobbled streets is like stepping back in time, but there is a sophisticated feel about the old town too, packed with boutiques and pavement cafes, excellent restaurants and lively late night bars. All around the central 'Stradun' and bustling market square are beautiful old buildings, palaces and monasteries, while walking around the fortified city walls is well worthwhile for the fabulous views.
